A harrowing incident has come to light involving two suspected stowaways on a British Airways flight from Johannesburg to London. One man miraculously survived the 8,000-mile journey, where air temperatures plummeted to minus 50C, while the other tragically lost his life.

The deceased stowaway is believed to have fallen from the aircraft’s wheel well during its approach to London Heathrow. His body was discovered on the roof of a business in Richmond, just a few miles from the airport. The survivor, thought to be in his twenties, was found shortly after the flight landed.

Aviation expert David Learmount, a consulting editor of Flight International magazine, commented on the extraordinary survival of one of the men. He suggested that the survivor must have found shelter inside the aircraft’s hold, as it would be nearly impossible to survive the freezing temperatures and lack of oxygen in the wheel well at 35,000 feet.

Learmount also raised concerns about airport security in Johannesburg, especially if the individuals were not airport workers with authorized access to restricted areas. The case echoes a similar tragic incident from September 2012, when another stowaway, Jose Matada, fell to his death in Mortlake from a flight originating in Angola.

The Scotland Yard has initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, including how the body ended up on the roof. The community, particularly near where the body was found, has been deeply affected, with local clergy planning to hold prayers for the deceased and the survivor.
