Tragedy struck on Thursday when a former mayor of Santa Monica, identified as R.M., aged 95, lost his life in a distressing incident involving a Cessna 150A aircraft. The aircraft, with R.M. as a passenger, experienced a harrowing forced landing on Santa Monica Beach, located just south of the iconic pier.

The pilot of the aircraft, who remains unidentified, had requested a return to Santa Monica Airport shortly after takeoff, citing issues with the aircraft's engine, which was running rough. In a desperate attempt to reach safety, the pilot aimed to line up with Runway 3 but ultimately informed the control tower that he couldn't make it back to the airport and was heading for the nearby beach.

As the incident unfolded, the tide was receding, revealing a broad expanse of hard-packed sand that the pilot may have been targeting for a landing. However, the aircraft ultimately came to rest in the surf. Rapid response from first responders ensured that both individuals were swiftly transported to a local hospital, but tragically, R.M. succumbed to his injuries.
