Small Floatplane Crashes at Lake Hood in Anchorage

A small floatplane, identified as a De Havilland DHC-2 Beaver, crashed at Lake Hood in Anchorage on Sunday, June 7, 2009, shortly after takeoff. Remarkably, no serious injuries were reported in the incident that involved a family of four and their two dogs.

The crash was captured on video by a young spectator and his father, who were filming various planes taking off and landing at the time. They observed the Beaver struggling to gain altitude before it flew past them at an alarmingly low height and crashed off to the side of the shore.

According to eyewitness Peter Buchinsky, the plane unexpectedly popped up instead of lifting off smoothly and subsequently collided with a fence. The crash occurred on land, contrary to initial concerns that it might have happened in the water.

The family on board, who were en route to a lake, were understandably shaken by the ordeal. The pilot reported that a sudden gust of wind pushed the aircraft, leading to the collision with the fence and the subsequent crash.

This incident at Lake Hood, known for being the world's busiest seaplane base, has brought attention to the challenges of floatplane operations, especially in variable weather conditions. Safety protocols for such aircraft, particularly during takeoff and landing phases, are likely to be reviewed in light of this accident.

Re: Small Floatplane Crashes at Lake Hood in Anchorage

In accidents like this, if he had crashed in the water I would have said, "blerp".

As it is, I'll just have to go back to the old reliable "derp" with a .
