Sightseeing Helicopter Crashes into Manhattan's East River
On March 11, 2018, a sightseeing helicopter operated by Liberty Helicopters crashed into the East River off Manhattan, New York City. The incident resulted in the tragic loss of five lives. Two passengers were declared deceased at the crash site, and three others later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The sole survivor, the pilot, managed to escape the helicopter following the crash. The helicopter was a red Eurocopter AS350, chartered privately for a photo shoot when it went down with six individuals on board. During the descent, the pilot attempted an emergency landing after a passenger's harness inadvertently activated the fuel shutoff lever. Despite efforts to restart the engine, the aircraft rapidly descended, touched down on the river, and capsized, resulting in the passengers being trapped and subsequently drowning. |

Re: Sightseeing Helicopter Crashes into Manhattan's East River
A calm pilot issued urgent "mayday" calls in the moments before his helicopter slammed into New York City's East River late Sunday, killing five people in a crash that may have been caused by a passenger's bag inadvertently hitting the emergency fuel shutoff button. "Mayday, mayday, mayday," said the pilot, followed by "East River, engine failure." The audio was captured by LiveATC.net. Part of the transmission was obscured by static, and LaGuardia Air Traffic Control asked him to repeat it. "It was a mayday call, LaGuardia," the third party says. The helicopter, operated by Liberty Helicopter Tours, crashed and flipped upside down in the water. The pilot was the only survivor. The pilot freed himself and was rescued by a tugboat, officials said. The five dead passengers were recovered from the submerged helicopter, a private charter hired for a photo shoot, by police and fire department divers.

So the emergency fuel shut off is in a place located where passengers can accidentally engage it........ Ok |

Re: Sightseeing Helicopter Crashes into Manhattan's East River
Family of one of the victims is suing for a bunch of different reasons, including the pilot not helping the others out of their harnesses before saving himself. I can see there being no time, but there was also a problem of the harnesses not being the type that are easily releasable and have to be cut through. The passengers were not provided with knives before hand. There was supposed to be inflation devices that deployed to keep the helicopter from flipping like it did - but they didn’t work properly. Something about there being no doors on the aircraft was also said to be unsafe. I guess it would have given them more time, if it was a sealed environment. |

Horrible situation, tragic for the families of those who died. But when faced with a heavy sinking object like that, what can you do? If the pilot had gone back for others, he quickly would’ve gone down with them. Sad.

He was having engine problems over central park and did not land there. Inadequate briefing of passengers. Seemingly a passenger harness snagged the fuel cut-off valve.
