Russian Long Range Bomber Crashes After Overshooting the Runway
Video footage captures a dramatic incident involving a Russian long-range TU-22M3 bomber that ended in a crash after overshooting the runway at a military base. The colossal Tupolev aircraft attempted to abort its takeoff, but despite the pilot's efforts, it failed to come to a halt and careened off the tarmac, eventually colliding with trees during the controversial Zapad 2017 war games, presided over by Vladimir Putin. The incident occurred on September 14, although the video footage has only recently been made public. Remarkably, all four crew members managed to escape the bomber, and air force officials in Moscow have expressed optimism that the aircraft can be restored despite sustaining "serious damage." The video provides a dramatic auditory and visual account of the TU-22M3's collision with the trees at the end of the runway at the Shaikovka military base in the Kaluga region. The video footage shows the missile carrier accelerating before takeoff, followed by the deployment of its brake parachute in an attempt to stop. However, the aircraft's heavy weight for the aborted takeoff proved challenging to manage. High-ranking sources have revealed that the decision to abort the takeoff was due to malfunctioning speed sensors, leading to the unfortunate incident. A senior official summarized, "The cause of the accident was the failure of speed sensors during take-off, resulting in the crew deciding to abort." Fortunately, the crew members emerged unharmed, and a spokesperson for the Russian Defense Ministry assured that the aircraft would resume its assigned duties after undergoing necessary maintenance work. During the crash, the Tupolev's wings separated from the main body of the plane, and the aircraft skidded approximately 100 meters along the runway, ultimately coming to a halt near a forest, having lost both its wings and chassis. This embarrassing incident is under investigation by a specially formed Air and Space Forces commission. |
