Plane Taking Off From Van Nuys Airport Crashes into Parking Lot
On September 11, 2020, at 1500 Pacific daylight time, a Navion B aircraft, registration N37C, crashed shortly after departure from Van Nuys Airport (VNY) in Van Nuys, California. The accident resulted in the tragic deaths of both the pilot and passenger on board. Witnesses reported that the airplane departed to the south from Van Nuys Airport and was flying lower than normal. They observed the aircraft start a right turn earlier than is typical for most airplanes. During the turn, a "pop" sound was heard, and the airplane subsequently made a hard right turn. Following this, the airplane descended nose-down with the wings at a slight angle until it went out of sight. A plume of smoke was observed shortly after the airplane descended, indicating the crash site. The crash occurred in a narrow parking lot approximately half a mile from the runway. The wreckage of the airplane was contained within a small area between two rows of vehicles. A postcrash fire ensued, causing significant damage to the fuselage, aft fuselage, engine, cabin area, and wings, which exhibited extensive aft crush damage. The empennage was present but had sustained extensive thermal damage. The airplane was later recovered to a secure location for further examination. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board initiated investigations into the crash. At the time of the accident, the aircraft was reportedly en route to Santa Ynez Airport in Santa Barbara County. |

you're supposed to aim the fire extinguisher at the base (fuel source) of the fire, not just at the flames.

Right?! If you aim above the base of the fire it suppresses oxygen which causes a form of backdraft, because it tries to suck oxygen towards it. Except, in case's like this, the oxygen it pulls is also on fire so the fire extinguisher becomes redundant. Possibly even making it worse. You literally have to hit both sides at the same time, at the base, to prevent a whirlpool like cycle
