Plane Leaves Runway, Collides With Helicopters Near Mt. Everest

A tragic accident occurred on April 14, 2019, at the Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, Nepal, near Mount Everest, involving a small Summit Air plane and two helicopters. The plane, a Summit Air Let 410 registered as 9N-AMH, was taking off for Ramechhap Airport when it veered off the runway and collided with two parked helicopters.

The accident resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including the co-pilot of the Summit Air plane, Sujit Dhungana, and Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police Ram Bahadur Khadka, who was stationed at Lukla for airport security. Sub-Inspector Rudra Bahadur Shrestha, who was seriously injured in the crash, later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Kathmandu. Additionally, three other people were injured, including the captain of the flight and a pilot from Manang Air.

The plane and one of the helicopters, a Manang Air's B3e Helicopter registered as 9N-ALC, were damaged beyond repair. Another helicopter, belonging to Shree Airlines with registration 9N-ALK, was partially damaged. The Summit Air plane was not carrying passengers at the time of the incident.

An investigation was launched to determine why the aircraft veered off course during takeoff and collided with the helicopters located about 100 meters past the runway threshold. Weather conditions at the time of the crash were described as good.

Lukla-Tenzing-Hillary Airport is a key gateway to the Everest region and is known for being one of the world's most challenging airports due to its short runway and mountainous location. The airport was built by Sir Edmund Hillary, the first mountaineer to reach the summit of Mount Everest, as a gift to the people of the Solukhumbu region.

Organised chaos, clearly lacks any kind of 'plans of action' in the event of a disaster.

Re: Plane Leaves Runway, Collides With Helicopters Near Mt. Everest

Everybody knows that's a short roll and it's actually harder to land that fucker than it is to takeoff. I don't know what might have happened but that was seriously fucked up, and it doesn't happen often there. I put my money on pilot error!
