Reminds me of the Aeroméxico Flight 498 that crashed in Cerritos, CA in 1986, but that was a smaller DC-9 that collied with a Piper Cub that had deviated into the LAX Terminal Control Area, was out of radio contact with air traffic control...82 people died including 15 on the ground. One good thing is that that today, air controllers use radar to keep track of air traffic. It wasn’t long after the 182 crash that the FAA scrapped the old system of having the pilots maintain visual contact with other planes...with all the traffic we have today there's probably no way they could... |

My father was a Captain for PSA and USair. That was his scheduled flight. He flew that trip the day before and the day after, but luckily, due to a schedule change he was at home in San Diego the day is Crash.
