Pilot Robert Earhart Takes Off, Ends up in Trees
On March 30, 2022, a Cessna 180, registration N4738B, was involved in an accident at Lampasas Airport (KLZZ) in Lampasas, Texas. The pilot, Robert Earhart, attempted to take off in high winds and ended up crashing into trees. The discussion on a Pilots of America forum indicates that this was an intentional takeoff, despite the challenging conditions. There was speculation about whether there was a malfunction with the throttle, but it appears that the decision to take off was deliberate, despite the crosswinds and the limited space available. The forum also mentions that the taxiway used for the attempted takeoff was less than 400 feet long, raising questions about the judgment behind the decision. |

Re: Pilot Robert Earhart Takes Off, Ends up in Trees
He attempted to take off from a taxiway because he thought it was better oriented to the wind. While there's some logic behind that, the wind has to be incredibly strong or the taxiway incredibly long. He didn't even get enough speed to raise the tail.

Yeeeeeaaaahhhh. I've seen RC airplane runways longer than that taxiway. Good luck selling that to your insurance. If you cant take off in a crosswind you shouldn't be flying. Having owned the aircraft since 1983, you'd think he would have a better idea what it was capable of doing - or not doing. |
