Pilot Killed After Plane Crashed into Sea at Dixon Cove, Honduras
A tragic accident occurred on May 18, 2019, when a private Piper PA-32-260 plane crashed into the sea shortly after taking off from Roatán Island, a popular tourist destination on the Atlantic coast of Honduras. The incident resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including the pilot and four foreign tourists. The crash took place near the town of Dixon Cove, just minutes after the aircraft departed from the island's airport. The plane was en route to the tourist port city of Trujillo, approximately 80 kilometers (about 49.71 miles) from Roatán, an island known for attracting tourists from the United States, Canada, and Europe. Initial reports from local emergency services indicated that the victims included four Canadians and a person of unknown nationality. However, armed forces spokesman Jose Domingo Meza later stated that four of the victims were from the United States, with the fifth victim's nationality still to be confirmed. The Canadian Press, in contact with Global Affairs Canada, confirmed that a Canadian citizen was among those deceased. The identities of the deceased were initially released as B.P., B.S., T.D., and pilot P.F. Another Canadian pilot, A.D., initially survived the crash but later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Authorities at the scene did not immediately confirm the cause of the crash. The accident has drawn attention to the safety of private aviation in popular tourist destinations and the importance of stringent safety measures in aviation, especially in areas with high tourist traffic. The investigation into the accident is ongoing, with local authorities and aviation experts working to determine the precise cause of the tragedy |
