In a dramatic incident at Boone County Airport, an Indiana pilot found himself in the hospital following a plane crash on Monday afternoon. Fortunately, he sustained only minor injuries, thanks in part to the swift response of fellow pilots who rushed to assist when they witnessed the accident.

One of these fellow pilots even captured the incident on a cell phone video, providing a glimpse into the harrowing moments of the crash.

The video footage reveals the precise moment when a small experimental 1972 Houlihan RTH Jungster Bi-Plane flipped and crashed on a grassy runway.

The pilot of the ill-fated bi-plane was identified as 55-year-old James Petko from Mishawaka. Petko later informed rescuers that he had been flying north from Bloomington and was not familiar with the layout of Boone County Airport. Unbeknownst to him, heavy rains had left one section of the grass runway prone to flooding.

Tragically, it was precisely this section where a fellow pilot observed Petko's plane attempting a landing that was too long. The decision placed the aircraft closer to the waterlogged end of the runway, resulting in a catastrophic outcome.

The eyewitness recalled the sequence of events, stating, "It put him closer to where the water was at the end of the runway and shortly after he touched down and landed, his whole plane flipped over upside down." He also emphasized the fortunate presence of multiple individuals at the airport that day, which is not the norm.

In a swift response to the crash, he and three other individuals quickly mobilized, jumping into their trucks and racing to the runway. They found Petko trapped in his aircraft, bleeding, with the nose of the plane stuck in the mud. Their timely assistance played a crucial role in ensuring Petko's safety and medical attention following the incident.
