Dead Horse on Runway Causes Pilot to Crash in Brazil

On December 8, 2017, a Cessna 210R aircraft, registered under the tail number PR-LOR, was involved in a dramatic accident near Vila Nereu in the São Félix do Xingu region of Pará, Brazil. The aircraft, owned and operated privately, was carrying five occupants, including investors interested in soybean farming in the area. The flight originated from Ourilândia do Norte and was bound for Vila Nereu.

The incident occurred during the final landing approach when the pilot encountered an unexpected obstacle – a dead animal, presumably a horse, lying on the unpaved airstrip. In an attempt to avoid the animal, the pilot executed an evasive maneuver. Unfortunately, during this maneuver, the aircraft's wing collided with a high-tension power line, causing the pilot to lose control. The aircraft subsequently crashed into the ground.

Despite the severity of the crash, which resulted in the aircraft being written off as damaged beyond repair, there were no fatalities. However, one passenger suffered a broken nose, and others sustained minor injuries, including a clavicle fracture and a maxillary fracture. Local residents provided initial assistance to the victims until further help arrived.
