Pictures From Swissair 111 Crash in 1998
Swissair Flight 111 was a scheduled international passenger flight from New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Geneva Airport in Switzerland. On September 2, 1998, the aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. The flight had taken off from JFK Airport and was en route to Geneva when the crew reported smoke in the cockpit and declared an emergency. The aircraft was diverted to Halifax Stanfield International Airport in Nova Scotia. However, before it could reach the airport, the fire on board became uncontrollable, and the aircraft crashed into the sea. Tragically, all 229 people on board lost their lives in the crash. The accident was attributed to an in-flight fire that started in the aircraft's entertainment system wiring. The fire spread rapidly, causing the crew to lose control of the aircraft.  ·  ·  ·  ·  · |

That's in fact ATC audio. The CVR and FDR are sealed under Canadian law and have never been released. One can view body parts recovered in clear plastic bags (and some fingers being processed for prints) by viewing YouTube - The Fifth Estate; The Investigation of Swissair 111. Tame by DR standards but still disturbing. You need only watch the first ten minutes to view the dismemberment. Very sad...and my apologies if it bothers anyone that I am replying to such an old thread. |
