At Least 12 Dead In Kazakh Plane Crash Near Almaty, Kazakhstan
A tragic aviation accident occurred in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on December 27, when a Bek Air passenger plane carrying 93 travelers and five crew members crashed shortly after takeoff from Almaty airport. At least 12 people were confirmed dead, and 66 others were injured, with 49 remaining hospitalized, 18 in serious condition. President Qasym-Zhomart Toqaev declared December 28 as a national day of mourning. The flight, en route to the capital Nur-Sultan, encountered a catastrophic failure during takeoff. Initial reports indicate that the aircraft lost altitude, collided with a concrete fence, and subsequently impacted a two-story building, fortunately empty at the time. Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar noted that the plane's tail section hit the runway twice before veering off course. This Fokker 100 aircraft, part of Bek Air's fleet, was manufactured in 1996 and received its latest flight certificate in May 2019. Following the incident, all flights involving Bek Air and Fokker 100 jets have been suspended. The crash occurred under heavy fog conditions, as reported by a Reuters journalist at the scene. In the aftermath, a significant rescue operation involving nearly 1,000 personnel was launched, and a local blood bank reported an overwhelming response from volunteers donating blood for the injured. The passenger list included two Ukrainians, a Chinese, a Kyrgyz national, and predominantly Kazakh nationals. A survivor, quoted by Tengrinews, described the terrifying moments before the crash, with the plane tilting and people reacting in panic. The crash site, located in the Almerek area just beyond the runway, was quickly secured by authorities. The manufacturer of the Fokker 100 filed for bankruptcy in 1996, ceasing production a year later. President Toqaev vowed tough punishment for those responsible, as per Kazakh law, while extending condolences to the victims' families. In a recent update, survivor Aslan Nazaraliyev, 34, recounted the plane rocking violently before losing control and crashing into the building. He described a chaotic scene where passengers used smartphone flashlights to aid the injured and expressed concern over the delayed arrival of ambulances. This eyewitness account adds to the growing understanding of the chaotic moments during and after the crash. |

Re: At Least 12 Dead In Kazakh Plane Crash Near Almaty, Kazakhstan
Update: "the plane started “rocking like a boat” as it gained altitude after takeoff. Then, he said, it started shaking violently and people on board started to panic, even as the craft continued to climb. About a minute later, “the flight got out of control,” like a car skidding on ice," frost/ice on wings = stall |
