Re: Last Video & Radio Transmissions From Space Shuttle Columbia

I've watched this a few times over the years and have often wondered what those last few moments must have been like. The footage of ground control is still astonishing to watch, particularly as the realisation that a fatal catastrophe has occurred dawns on the capcom team.

Is it me, or do they all seem to be agitated with the Indian lady? She seemed to be a bit of a distraction while they were in the process of re-entry. If you watch the full video leading up to where this clip begins, you would think she was the only person in the cabin... Gloves, camera, visor, trash collection, nonstop chatter the whole damn time...I think I could pick up on a little discontent in their tone with their responses, but she just kept right on...
It's just you.

Well... Some interesting stories to say the least. My mother and Rick Husband's wife taught at the same school in Amarillo back in the day... I moved from west Texas to east Texas after I got married and part of the shuttle landed on our property. My brother-in-law found a rather large piece just last month... But... Who cares...

It should have been decommissioned 10 years before that. Ridiculous, way to go nasa.

Re: Last Video & Radio Transmissions From Space Shuttle Columbia

Shuttle was a bad design to begin with it was built to suit a much lower budget than the Saturn V and to suit the needs of the military. Rockets before it could eject the crew capsule at any speed and altitude apart from when orbit is achieved and didn't require wings and control surfaces, hydraulics for re entry.

Re: Last Video & Radio Transmissions From Space Shuttle Columbia

The worst thing is NASA knew! they could have had it properly evaluated in orbit, but didn't and decided not to tell the crew. Most died from blunt force trauma after break up as the unrestrained parts whipped around inside the cabin. The decompression would have rendered them unconscious instantly thankfully. Unlike the Vhallenger crew who died on impact with the ocean.

Re: Last Video & Radio Transmissions From Space Shuttle Columbia

The cameras were still rolling while it disintegrated, so who's got the footage of it all coming apart? Where is it?

Re: Last Video & Radio Transmissions From Space Shuttle Columbia

They never knew anything was wrong it seems.
I wonder if the pilot who told that annoying woman,- who said it would only take a minute to put her gloves on, and was still yakking on about them four minutes later, - to test her suit suspected something was wrong?
