Re: Last Video & Radio Transmissions From Space Shuttle Columbia

I was expecting to see flames leaping into the cockpit actually. I suppose it was all over in seconds, burning up at 20,000 mph or whatever it was doing.

Re: Last Video & Radio Transmissions From Space Shuttle Columbia

This video ends just as they were getting into a problem. Right after they noted the loss of the signal from the 4 temp sensors is when the wing burned through. I'd like to see the NEXT 30 seconds of video, because that is where all the important things happen.

A complete report from NASA is in pdf form below.

At the end of the report they (NASA) believe all the crew would have been unconscious

From this time forward, the crew members would have been unconscious, totally unaware of events,
and unable to brace against the loads. With the configuration of the ACES (i.e., visors up and three crew
members without gloves donned), the depressurization was an event of lethal potential. Had the ACES been
configured with the visors down and locked, gloves on, and EOS activated, the depressurization event by
itself probably would have been survivable.

Re: Last Video & Radio Transmissions From Space Shuttle Columbia

PDF below

Columbia: Final Voyage

In ‘Columbia: Final Voyage’ aerospace writer Philip Chien, who has over 20 years’ experience covering the US space program, provides a unique insight into the crew members who lost their lives in the Columbia disaster. Chien interviewed all seven crew members several times and got to know them as individuals. He reviews in detail their training, their scientific work and other activities during their successful 16-day flight, the background of the accident itself and a detailed first-hand account of what happened that fateful day in February 2003. The author provides a comprehensive and personal look at both the Columbia astronauts and the STS-107 mission, together with a behind-the-scenes account of other people involved in the mission and their personal reactions to the accident.

Forward by Jonathan B. Clark, widower of Columbia astronaut Laurel Clark

Introduction by Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin

Re: Last Video & Radio Transmissions From Space Shuttle Columbia

Is it me, or do they all seem to be agitated with the Indian lady? She seemed to be a bit of a distraction while they were in the process of re-entry. If you watch the full video leading up to where this clip begins, you would think she was the only person in the cabin... Gloves, camera, visor, trash collection, nonstop chatter the whole damn time...I think I could pick up on a little discontent in their tone with their responses, but she just kept right on...

Re: Last Video & Radio Transmissions From Space Shuttle Columbia

On a side note...
There is a great documentary on Netflix right now about the Challenger disaster...Has anybody seen the images from the wreckage when NASA recovered the crew cockpit of Challenger? According to the documentary, all the crew remains were still intact and seat belted in place... Would love to see this if it does indeed exist.
