Japan Airlines and Japan Coast Guard Plane Crash and Burn at Haneda Airport
A serious incident unfolded at Tokyo Haneda Airport involving a JAL Japan Airlines Airbus A350-900, with registration JA13XJ, operating as flight JL-516 from Sapporo to Tokyo, and a Japanese Coast Guard Dash 8-300, registered as JA722A. This collision occurred on Haneda's runway 34R at 17:47 local time during nighttime conditions, resulting in both aircraft erupting in flames. The Airbus, carrying 367 passengers (including 8 children) and 12 crew members, managed to successfully evacuate everyone on board after coming to a stop just off the right edge of the runway, approximately 1680 meters down. Unfortunately, the Coast Guard aircraft, which was carrying 6 crew members and supplies for earthquake relief in Niigata, also ignited in the collision. Tragically, five of the six occupants in the Dash 8 lost their lives, and the Dash 8 captain suffered severe injuries. Fourteen passengers from the Airbus sustained injuries. Initial reports from JAL indicated that there were no issues with the Airbus before departure, and the crew had received proper landing clearance. The evacuation was carried out using three emergency slides. The Japanese Transport Safety Board (JTSB) is conducting a thorough investigation into the particulars of the accident. |

Re: Japan Airlines and Japan Coast Guard Plane Crash and Burn at Haneda Airport
Captain of the JCG a/c survived. Crew members are "accounted for but their condition is unknown" - well, if they were alive they would say so (as they did with the Capt) so I would surmise that the five crew didn't make it and they are waiting to inform family before confirming it publicly.

ATC audio, via LiveATC, is publicly available. The relevant section of the LiveATC archive is attached to this post. The audio isn't crash hot (pardon the pun) but at approx: - 13:00 Tower to JL516 - Continue Approach 34R - 14:50 Tower to JL516 - Cleared to land 34R - 15:10 Tower to JA722A Taxi to holding point C-5 I have also attached the airport diagrams & info for Tokyo Haneda Airport (NJTT). On page 4 near the top you can see the runway (34R) the A350 was landing on and the hold point (C-5) where the coastguard plane was told to wait, without entering the runway. |

Re: Japan Airlines and Japan Coast Guard Plane Crash and Burn at Haneda Airport
Great info akham I've heard elsewhere that the CG pilot claims he was cleared to takeoff runway 34R. Another observation. C5 taxiway is a high-speed (angled) exit for RW16L which is the same runway but opposite direction. If the CG plane was holding there the captain sitting in the left seat would not be able to see the JAL plane on runway 34R, and it would be difficult though not probably not impossible for the First Officer to see them also. Think merging onto the left lane of a highway in a car with no mirrors and no rear windows. A dangerous operation for sure. As a commercial pilot myself I have never been told to use a high speed exit to enter a runway. |

A dangerous operation for sure. As a commercial pilot myself I have never been told to use a high speed exit to enter a runway. yep, but the small plane was coastal guard, which I consider military. I guess it had landed there for a fuel or personnel pick up, and the pilots were not very used to this buzzy public air field. I heard Juan Brown say he could vaguely understand "hold on at c5", but I could not. Hurry Hurry can work on a military base, but not at that base with sluggish planes around. |
