How Not to Put the Plane Back into the Hangar

A student pilot experienced a harrowing crash at Toronto Buttonville Municipal Airport in Markham, Ontario, on Monday, August 24, 2020. The incident, captured by an onboard camera, showed the pilot's struggle to control a Cessna 172M Skyhawk, registered to Canadian Flyers International.

The aircraft, manufactured in 1973 with serial number 172-60821 and powered by an Avco Lycoming O-320-E2D engine, was being used for training circuits at the airport. Following a landing attempt on runway 33 at approximately 15:44 UTC, the plane unexpectedly veered left. The pilot, attempting to avert a ground collision, applied full power to lift off but lost control. Subsequently, the aircraft veered right, exited the runway near taxiway BRAVO 1, traversed a grassy area and a taxiway, before ultimately colliding with a hangar on the apron.

The dramatic footage reveals the severity of the incident, as the plane went off the runway and crashed into the hangar. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the Cessna and substantial damage to the hangar.

Miraculously, the student pilot, the sole occupant of the aircraft, survived with only minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for assessment. The identity of the pilot has not been disclosed.

That guy pushed the throttle full forward (Max power) and then tried to steer using the control yoke. He must not have many hours of flight time.

What. The. Fuck.

Which CFI signed off for him to solo? I read that he survived this. Hopefully he is never allowed behind the controls again.

I’m actually pretty shocked he survived.

Should’ve killed the engine on the runway

I don’t understand how he was allowed to fly alone.

I’m not a pilot but that seemed very avoidable.

Re: How Not to Put the Plane Back into the Hangar

Tough to watch. I am in no way transport Canada or NTSB investigator but I am a private pilot with roughly 600 hours and do own a 172M. I can tell you from personal experience and video observation his left knee did not extend enough that would qualify as full left rudder authority if he had any input on it at all. Just glad he is ok.
