I have no idea how things work but is it possible the throttle was was left on? Or can they move like that everything at the lowest
Im no pilot but if youve ever started an engine like this, you would probably want to have a little throttle on.

Again, no pilot but im sure the parking brake would have been enough

Re: Hand Propping Accident at Mason City Municipal Airport Leads to Crash

So, the back story to this was that the pilot (his name is Keith) left all the accessories/batteries on for a long pre-flight check/dicking around period, then when he got in the plane, the batteries were too dead to start the engine. He called the Fixed Base Operator (FBO) which stated that they didnt have a jump cart available at the time because nobody certified to use it was there, so the “pilot” got in and set the parking brake, but did not push down on the brakes enough (or at all) to have enough line pressure to hold the plane. He then set the throttle to the starting position and hand-propped the engine (which is supposed to be a two man operation, or have the plane tied down), the engine started and the plane started it’s journey.

After the crash, another pilot who was in the hangar, came out to see Keith on the phone walking around the plane with the batteries and fuel pumps still on, pumping fuel from a busted line onto the tarmac. This pilot entered the plane and shut off the pumps and battery.

It was a company owned plane, and Keith had limited experience with only 373 hours of flight time over 4 years (all in the SR22)

The NTSB report states the causes as:
“Battery not serviced or maintained”
“Aircraft control-pilot” and “Airport Structure-Effect on operation”. Basically, if the battery was charged, the FBO had staff available for the charger, or the pilot didnt have his head up his ass, this wouldnt have happened.

The NTSB further stated that the pilot’s “Loss of control on the ground” as the defining event

Interesting side note: this was the same airport from “the day the music died”, as Buddy Holly, Frankie Valenz, and JP “The Big Bopper” Richardson took off from and crashed near by.

Anyways, here are pictures of the inside of the cockpit of the SR22 after the accident. It seems that the pilot/driver had just completely entered the cockpit when the plane slammed into the hanger, so he flew forward against the bulkhead
