Wing of Glider Hits Tree Making It Crash into the Ground
On April 30, 2018, a significant aviation incident occurred in Żernica, Poland, involving a PZL-Bielsko SZD-9bis Bocian 1E glider, registration SP-2589. During the landing phase, the glider, operating under private ownership, encountered a critical situation leading to a crash. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, but both occupants sustained serious injuries. The accident took place in the picturesque Bieszczady Mountains, a region known for its challenging flying conditions. Reports indicated that the pilot, while attempting to land, made a maneuver that led to the glider striking the ground. According to available information, the pilot had been flying at approximately 984 feet before descending to a lower altitude. During this process, the pilot made a 180-degree turn towards the runway, which unfortunately resulted in the glider clipping a tree and nosediving into the ground at a speed of 84 mph. The immediate aftermath of the crash was marked by emergency response efforts to attend to the injured occupants. The police confirmed that the injuries, although serious, were not life-threatening. This incident highlights the inherent risks associated with glider operations, especially in mountainous terrain. The guy in the back looked to get off really lucky. Had I been in the back, I would have backseat driven so hard, telling the pilot to just not be a dick and glide the glider, or just land the damn thing right here right now! |

The guy in the back was the pilot. The guy up front was just a tourist who paid for an acrobatic glider flight.
