Fatal Accident at Lewiston-Nez Perce County Airport in Lewiston, Idaho
On July 24, 2021, a SIAI Marchetti SM-1019B aircraft, registered as N28U, was involved in a significant accident at Lewiston-Nez Perce County Airport (LWS) in Lewiston, Idaho. Tragically, the pilot sustained fatal injuries in the incident. The accident occurred during an intersection takeoff attempt, with the plane becoming airborne before encountering a sudden pitch-up, left roll, and eventual nosedive into the ground. Initial examinations found no evidence of pre-accident malfunctions or flight control system failures. Both the engine and propeller showed damage consistent with high engine power at impact. The investigation revealed the presence of a flight control locking system that immobilized aileron and elevator controls while allowing near-full movement of the rudder and tailwheel. Strikingly, the control lock appeared to have been installed during takeoff and was found raised off the floor. High-resolution security camera footage indicated no movement of the elevators or ailerons, reinforcing the theory that the flight controls were immobilized by the control lock. It was suggested by a pilot with a similar aircraft that he had once inadvertently initiated takeoff with the control lock engaged, necessitating significant effort to remove it. The pilot's autopsy detected heart disease, but it was deemed unlikely to have caused inattention or incapacitation during the accident. The final radio transmission from the pilot indicated awareness and communication even after the loss of control, ruling out the possibility of incapacitation due to heart disease. |

Saw some post accident photos of interior and flight controls. The flight control lock was definitely engaged. Speedy pre-flight fucked him.

It was a very experienced pilot. He just made a simple mistake. Complacency is a killer. |

The NTSB has released its findings in the July 24, 2021, crash that killed airshow performer and former U.S. Navy fighter pilot Dale "Snort" Snodgrass at the Lewis-Nez Perce County Airport in Idaho. Snodgrass was the only person aboard the single-engine, high-wing, tailwheel SIAI-Marchetti SM.1019B when it crashed shortly after becoming ..."Snort was a very familiar pilot at airshows all over the country and was a retired F-14 pilot. I knew him from USS Nimitz (CVN-68) when we were on Med cruise together in the early 1980's.

Dale Snodgrass speaks to children from the "Starbase" program at the Florida Air National Guard Base in Jacksonville, Fla. The Starbase program targets at-risk youth from local category one public schools and teaches math, science and technology in a fun hands-on environment. Capt. Snodgrass was the first to be selected for F-14 Tomcat training and went on to become the first non-fleet experienced pilot to carrier qualify in the F-14. Re: Fatal Accident at Lewiston-Nez Perce County Airport in Lewiston, Idaho
The Real Top Gun Nobody handled a Tomcat like Snort As the F-14 tomcat rounded the fantail on the aircraft carrier’s port side, Dale Snodgrass whipped it into an 85-degree banked turn. With its right wingtip below the flight deck, the jet sliced past the spectators, rolled wings level and pulled up into the vertical S of a double Immelman, then shot back down into a high-G aero*batic performance that flung mist off the wings like fur in a catfight. full article.... https://www.smithsonianmag.com/air-s...top-gun-32185/ So it seems WTFFTW not only had a few hours of flying he also lacks any experience of thinking. |

Props to that first person to run up, especially if they didn't know the pilot. Clearly didn't want to give up on the guy.
