Ethiopian Flight ET-302 Crashes in Bishoftu, Ethiopia

In a tragic incident involving an Ethiopian Boeing 737-8 MAX, flight ET-302 departed from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, en route to Nairobi, Kenya. The flight carried 149 passengers and 8 crew members. The aircraft took off from runway 07R at Addis Ababa and commenced its climb. However, at approximately 9000 feet above mean sea level the aircraft suddenly leveled off. Radar contact was lost at 08:44 local time. Regrettably, no survivors have been reported.

Ethiopian authorities swiftly initiated rescue and recovery efforts to respond to the crash, which occurred near Bishoftu, Ethiopia, approximately 17 nautical miles south-southeast of Addis Ababa. The aircraft had departed Addis Ababa at 08:38 local time, and both radio and radar contact with the aircraft were lost at 08:44 local time.

Ethiopia's state-owned Broadcasting Corporation, citing an unidentified spokesperson from Ethiopian Airlines, confirmed that no survivors have been located at the crash site. It is worth noting that the passengers on board represented 33 different countries.

Ethiopian Airlines expressed deep regret over the tragic accident involving flight ET-302. The airline's CEO arrived at the crash site and conveyed his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. A photograph released by the airline's CEO showed him standing at an impact crater at the crash site, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Ethiopia's Prime Minister also offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families during this difficult time.

Re: Ethiopian Flight ET-302 Crashes in Bishoftu, Ethiopia

The 737 Max-8 aircraft is relatively new to the skies, having been launched in 2016. It was added to the Ethiopian Airlines fleet in July last year.

Boeing said it was "deeply saddened" by the crash and offered to send a team to provide technical assistance.

Another plane of the same model was involved in a crash five months ago, when a Lion Air flight crashed into the sea near Indonesia with nearly 190 people on board.

Investigators say the pilots of the aircraft had appeared to struggle with an automated system designed to keep the plane from stalling - a new feature of the Boeing 737 Max.

The anti-stalling system repeatedly forced the plane's nose down, despite efforts by pilots to correct this, findings suggest.

There is no suggestion that the Ethiopian Airlines jet suffered similar issues on Sunday.

What about the airline's safety record?
Ethiopian Airlines flies to many destinations in Africa, making it a popular carrier in a continent where many airlines fly only from their home country to destinations outside Africa.

It has a good reputation for safety, although in 2010 one of the company's aeroplanes crashed in the Mediterranean Sea shortly after leaving Beirut.

The incident killed 90 people on board.

Absolutely tragic. Two crashes of the same model in less than 18 months? Boeing should really consider asking airlines to ground the Max until they figure out what the heck's going on.

Tragic. It will be interesting to see what brought the plane down. Terrorism or the 737 fault again.

Re: Ethiopian Flight ET-302 Crashes in Bishoftu, Ethiopia

If it turns out to be another problem with the MCAS then they need to ground all 8Max’s and fix the problem
