Well, if they actually went supersonic on the way down, I don't doubt that the aircraft started shedding fairings and possibly other parts. The airplane looks pretty intact in the video, although it is a little fuzzy and hard to see. But it appears to be relatively intact at that point in the dive.

In other words the plane pulverized in a blink of an eye when hitting the ground with that speed. So actual suffering would be minimal. Thats why planes have the habit of "going missing" over the sea. When speeds and tonnage get high enough, jets and planes simply turn to fine metal dust when they hit something hard and fast. All that will be left is some bigger metal scrap here and there.

Thanks for that video, especially the slo-mo version! Kind of eerie when half the aircraft is into the block, and the half that hasn't hit yet is perfectly intact.

I've been reading along, and pretty much agree with what's been said.
The clip of it going straight in tells a lot! The airframe is in one piece, and it would have had to be held in that attitude.

That video showing the disintegrating aircraft was very informative, great visual.....thank you......So that helps me understand why there wouldn't be much leftover from the aircraft but I was expecting to see more devastation of the surrounding area.....so i guess that nearly instant pulverization doesn't leave much of a trace......totally fascinating...

I concur with you that the jet had to be held in that downward attitude.
