DHL Cargo Plane Split in Two During an Emergency Landing
In the vicinity of Costa Rica's capital, an airport faced an unexpected closure last Thursday due to a dramatic incident involving a DHL cargo plane that split in half during an emergency landing. Remarkably, no injuries were reported in this heart-pounding event. The aircraft involved was a striking yellow B757-200F airliner, boasting a length of approximately 155 feet. It had been on its way to Guatemala when unforeseen circumstances compelled it to execute a sudden return to Juan Santamaria International Airport, located to the northwest of San Jose. Upon takeoff, the pilot and first officer aboard the cargo plane, which was laden with freight destined for Guatemala City, detected a "hydraulic issue." This forced them to make a quick decision to initiate an emergency landing, as explained by Daniel McGrath, a spokesperson for DHL, on the following Friday. Video footage capturing the incident swiftly spread across social media, revealing the plane skidding off the runway. After coming to a halt, thick plumes of smoke billowed from the aircraft, triggering an immediate response from emergency vehicles. Claus Korfmacher, representing DHL, the German-based package delivery company, confirmed in a statement issued on Friday that the plane had indeed suffered damage upon landing. The aftermath of this incident disrupted airport operations, resulting in over two dozen flight cancellations or delays at Juan Santamaria International Airport on Thursday, according to FlightAware, a website dedicated to monitoring air travel. |
