Tenerife Runway Collision Killed 583 in 1977
On March 27, 1977, KLM and Pan Am Boeing 747s collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport in Tenerife, Spain, killing 583 people. A bomb at Gran Canaria Airport had diverted flights to Los Rodeos, congesting the airport. Parked aircraft blocked the only taxiway, forcing departing planes to use the runway for taxiing. Thick fog also reduced visibility for both crews and the control tower. There were no survivors aboard the KLM aircraft. Sixty-one people survived aboard the Pan Am aircraft, all injured. The collision remains the deadliest accident in aviation history.
