Re: Dallas Airshow B-17 Flying Fortress Collides With Another Plane

retired heli pilot Mark C. said he heared on the radio the show organizer asking the P63 to take the lead of the B17. Mark took more photos and thought: "that's gonna be crowded".
The last photo shows clearly the bloodred painted tail sections.

photo of the pilots : see screen shot at the end

Re: Dallas Airshow B-17 Flying Fortress Collides With Another Plane

We won't know until NTSB completes its investigation, but it sure seems like a blind spot issue is a plausible cause of this. A lot of these older aircraft did not have great visibility from their cockpits, and at the speeds they are flying it can be really easy to lose sight of an aircraft. Even one as large as a B-17 can not been seen at certain angles from a P-63 cockpit.

They died doing something they loved. Beautiful planes. As viperStrike said the NTSB report is going to be interesting.

Re: Dallas Airshow B-17 Flying Fortress Collides With Another Plane

I mean... assuming there wasn't anything wrong with the smaller plane, just HOW do you not see the B-17?!
That is a very good question.

The video shows the smaller plane come banking in at the same level as the B-17. In that degree of bank, the pilot's view of the B-17 was obscured, in a very real "blind spot" under the belly of the incoming plane. The pilot never knew what he hit, and the B-17 crew had no chance with the entire fuselage broken off.

Horrifying accident that is going to have some very difficult questions and answers.

Based on the pilot, maybe he had a heart attack or diabetic shock or some shit...or just an old dumbass. Who knows.

Re: Dallas Airshow B-17 Flying Fortress Collides With Another Plane

Didn't more flyers die from training accidents in WW2 than flying combat missions?

I would fucking hate flying in a 4 engine plane with people shooting at me.

After watching all the angles provided, you and the others saying this may be right. Looked like the P-63 was at just enough of a bank angle up hide what's on his immediate righthand side. This makes me wonder if the P-63 (and P-39 that it was based on, for that matter) were known for poor visibility.

Either way, barring some acute medical condition or mechanical failure, I just find it hard to believe that the pilot of the P-63 didn't have any better situational awareness than that!

Also, as the B-17 was manned with five crewmembers, I wonder if any of them saw it coming.
