Chopper Carrying Donated Organ Crashes While Landing At USC Medical Building

A medical transport helicopter carrying a donated organ experienced a rough landing at the University of Southern California medical building in Los Angeles.

The incident occurred as the helicopter was attempting to land on top of Keck Hospital around 3:20 p.m. It happened in the 1500 block of North San Pablo Street in Boyle Heights, as reported by Margaret Stewart, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).

Fortunately, there was no indication of fuel leakage or fire following the incident. Witnesses at the scene described the situation, with pharmacist intern Bahador Aghakoochek recounting that people observed the helicopter's blade and debris flying through the air.

Among the three individuals on board, including the pilot, there were only minor injuries sustained. LAFD Battalion Chief Gene Bednarchik reported that the pilot was able to self-extricate from the wreckage and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The other two passengers also self-extricated and received medical attention at Keck Medical Center.

Despite the incident, the donated heart was successfully handed over to USC-County Hospital staff for further transport, ensuring that the critical organ donation process remained intact.

Fortunately, there were no injuries to anyone on the ground, and the crash did not disrupt patient care at the hospital, as confirmed by officials.

National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) officials are expected to arrive at the scene on Saturday to conduct an assessment and initiate an investigation into the cause of the helicopter's crash landing.

1. Shouldn't you use a piano mover to transport an organ?
2. Whoever gets that heart has built-in insurance. I mean, what are the odds of that heart being involved in another helicopter crash?

I agree with #2. If you survive even the slightest event on an airplane flight, the odds you will ever experience one again, EVER, are like 100 trillion to one. All those people who survived the gear-up landing with the 737 several years ago, can go fly on any airplane with the engines on fire, and know that they are going to arrive at their destination relaxed and refreshed. They are basically aviation- accident-proof.

As far as #1, I have spent many hours on a airliner jump-seat, holding a foam cooler on my lap, loaded with body parts being sent to be transplanted. They normally ride in the cockpit, on the floor behind the flight crew. If you occupy the jump seat, you get to rest the cooler on your lap, because there usually is no other space for them. Since I lived in Tucson, and Tucson was a big transplant town because of the big hospitals they have there, and the transplant programs at the University of Arizona hospital, at least every other trip in, I was carrying a cooler with body parts in it.
And NO, I DIDN'T break out the crackers, either!

Ha no, odds don't work that way.

Ha no, odds don't work that way.
Sorry,l but odds definitely DO work that way. Statistics are Statistics, and numbers don't lie.
Does it mean you CAN'T be involved in another aviation accident?
No.
But are you likely to ever be?
No.
You COULD be involved in another aviation accident. But the odds are now billions to one that you WILL be.
Numbers don't bend.

Ha wow I thought there's a chance you may have been just joking at first but apparently not.

It doesn't matter even if a person has been involved in two or three plane crashes in the past, any particular plane they get on in the future does not have its odds of something going wrong adjusted by that person boarding any more than any other random person. The other passengers are not safer having that person on the plane, the odds of crashing (however slim) are EXACTLY the same.

No they aren't, much as you might like to think so.
Because the safety numbers for aviation are so good, it MOST CERTAINLY DOES mean that the odds of an accident on another plane become astronomically small. Does it mean it COULD NOT crash? Not at all.
But the likelihood of a person experiencing TWO aviation accidents (Commercial, not light aviation) is so small that there is virtually no chance that a person who experiences ONE accident would EVER be involved in another. Numbers don't lie.
If you think this is not true, then find me people who have been in one aviation accident, and then been in another. The numbers will show how small the odds are, and they will certainly conform to the odds and statistic numbers that exist for aviation accidents.
If this is not true, then no statistics of any type have any real meaning, because none of the numbers would have any validity. Of course, this is not the case.
