Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX Overruns Runway and Falls Down Embankment
Yesterday a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX (registration HC-CYM) operated by Cuencana Airlines overran the runway while landing at Mariscal Lamar International Airport in Cuenca, Ecuador. The aircraft was operating a domestic cargo flight from Guayaquil, transporting a secure shipment of cash and valuables for the Central Bank of Ecuador. During its landing rollout, the aircraft failed to decelerate adequately. According to flight tracking data compiled by the Aviation Safety Network, the aircraft was still traveling at a ground speed of roughly 92 knots with only 500 meters of runway remaining. The Cessna broke through the airport's perimeter fence, went down a small embankment, and came to a stop across a busy public road, Hurtado de Mendoza Avenue, in the Milchichig neighborhood. Emergency response teams, including airport firefighters and local police, arrived immediately to extract the crew and secure the cargo. Both crew members survived the crash and are in stable condition with minor injuries. While initial local speculation pointed toward a potential mechanical failure, the official cause is currently being investigated by Ecuador's civil aviation authority. |
