Looks like great good fortune, in that they outran all the flamy parts and left them back a couple hundred feet behind them, and the only threat left was the stale bags of peanuts. This could have been MUCH worse! ![]() ![]() |

Re: CANADA | Delta Plane Crashes and Overturns While Landing at Toronto Airport
Nothing particularly unusual there for someone who was freshly rated with an atp. This is fairly common in regional carriers and while this was listed as a Delta flight it was operated by their subsidiary regional. I don't think it's been mentioned whether the first officer was pilot flying or the captain was pilot flying but ultimately it's up to the captain to determine if the conditions require them to fly the landing even if it would normally be the first officer's leg. Also if this data is correct it's quite possible that the first officer was on their initial operating experience period. In which case they would be flying with an instructor pilot.

Re: CANADA | Delta Plane Crashes and Overturns While Landing at Toronto Airport
Canada just released their preliminary report. The plane experienced a strong gust of wind at 150 ft above the runway and to maintain proper air speed engine power was reduced to idle which is correct. As they got a little closer to the runway the gust went away and engine power was not increased which led to an excessive sink rate and hard landing. The plane touched down with a vertical speed of 18 ft per second. The landing gear is only certified for 12 ft per second.
