Re: Canada - Boat Sails Into Path Of Seaplane Taking Off

Amphibious A/C have the right of way. Once they start their take-off run, they can't turn. It's the boater's responsibility to stay clear of the takeoff path and avoid the aircraft. I imagine this guy was drunk. It's gonna hurt a lot more when he gets the $200,000 bill for the aircraft. That looked like a DeHavilland Beaver. They may be over $300,000 now.
Oh, well. Smarter now!

That would seem logical yes but in fact it's backwards.
Aircraft operating on the water shall keep well clear and not impede the passage of other vessels.
Now the phrase "shall not impede" doesn't necessarily mean what you think it means.

Shall not impede means a certain vessel in this case the seaplane is not supposed to get in the way of another type of vessel. However if it does standard rules of the road apply, and the seaplane is considered a motor driven vessel which must give way to sailboats and adhere to normal steering and sailing rules with other power driven vessels.

Now in this particular case the aircraft was at a published seaplane airport with a control tower so the boat should not have been there in the first place.

Re: Canada - Boat Sails Into Path Of Seaplane Taking Off

I believe that they have an "Exclusion Zone" but the boat entered the zone, so the costs will end up being the registered boat owners responsibility & if he isnt insured, they will take everything he owns to pay for the plane. House, Car everything.
Expensive Trip !

Sometimes those new take-off ideas don't always work out, and you just end up with a sore beaver
