Bodies Recovered After A Small Plane Crash Near Little Haywood, Staffordshire
The plane that erupted in flames on a railway track came perilously close to a catastrophic collision with a packed train, with the incident occurring a mere eight minutes before potential disaster struck. The Piper Cherokee aircraft, carrying the pilot and one passenger, is believed to have crashed just moments before noon. However, at 11:52 a.m., the Euston to Lancaster service had passed through the exact location of the crash at Colwich Junction. Just minutes earlier, another express train had traversed the section of the track near Little Haywood, Staffordshire. Upon impact, the single-engined plane brought down power cables, resulting in a shower of debris and billowing smoke. Residents in the vicinity described hearing the plane pass over their rooftops with a deafening noise. Kath Wylie, 52, recalled the harrowing moment, stating, "It was like an incredibly loud drill. I looked out the window, and the wreckage was just yards away, the cables were all sparking, and there were flames and black smoke pouring out of it. At first, I thought it was a train crash, then I saw a piece of fuselage. It only just missed our house. All the people around here are incredibly lucky." Derek Higgot, 49, who was working in his garden nearby, witnessed the plane's sudden nosedive. He and a friend rushed to the scene but could only see smoke, leading them to fear the worst. The incident led to the closure of the West Coast Main Line, a crucial rail link connecting London to Liverpool, Manchester, and Glasgow. Engineers had to shut off power, causing significant disruptions for travelers. West Midlands ambulance spokesperson stated that paramedics arrived at the scene within three minutes but, sadly, there was nothing they could do to assist. Chief Superintendent Peter McHugh of British Transport Police confirmed that two individuals, the pilot and a passenger, were believed to have been on board the aircraft, which was registered to a 59-year-old man from Walsall. Rail operators suspended all services between Rugby and Stafford, warning of potential delays for the following day. |
