Antonov An-26 Cargo Plane Crash Landed in Sudan
On Tuesday morning, a military transport aircraft en route to Yida in the Ruweng Administrative Area encountered an accident at the Yida Airstrip, as confirmed by the Director General of Juba International Airport. The aircraft, an Antonov 26, affiliated with the Military Production Unit of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces and chartered by an individual whose identity remains undisclosed, departed from Juba International Airport at 6:18 a.m. A spokesperson noted, "The aircraft departed at 6:18 a.m. toward Yida. It was scheduled to land at 7:57 a.m., but unfortunately, it crashed at that time." He mentioned that adverse weather conditions and poor visibility in Yida and the broader Upper Nile region led to a change in the flight plan. "We've adjusted today's flight schedule to Upper Nile due to these conditions, waiting for the weather to improve," he added. According to Kur, the incident involved four crew members and one soldier who all survived and are currently receiving medical treatment. He further stated that all aviation activities to the Upper Nile are suspended for the day pending weather improvements. Yuhan Motor, a church official in Yida who observed the crash, reported that the plane had four passengers who suffered minor injuries. However, the lack of Civil Defense Force and Fire Brigade presence hampered emergency response efforts on the scene. Motor shared, "Despite the crash, all four individuals aboard were promptly taken to a medical facility. Among them, two are South Sudanese and two are foreigners, with one suffering arm injuries and another a head injury." He described the crash, noting, "The aircraft failed to execute a proper landing due to extremely low visibility and ended up off the runway, now engulfed in flames." This incident adds to a series of aviation mishaps that South Sudan has experienced in recent times. |
