Antonov An-22 Cock Heavy Transport Aircraft Breaks Apart Mid-air
A Russian military Antonov An-22 Cock heavy transport aircraft crashed in the Ivanovo region, around 125 miles northeast of Moscow today, killing the entire crew. The incident is notable especially for the fact that the Soviet-era plane had been widely reported as retired, roughly 18 months ago. Exactly why the aircraft was still flying is unclear, but it does raise some questions about the overall status of the Russian Aerospace Forces’ transport arm. According to the Investigative Committee of Russia, the country’s main federal investigating authority, the turboprop-powered airlifter went down near the village of Ivankovo. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the An-22 breaking apart in mid-air, with parts of the fuselage falling into a reservoir near the village. |

This aircraft (NATO call name for this class = Cock) was on a post-furious-maintenance flight to ensure airworthiness. It WAS slated to be retired (and there are only a few operational plus a lot of rusty parts and partials in storage) , they were still trying to use it due to desperation. Russia's upgrade / maintenance programs have been effectively strangled by sanctions, economic downturn and corruption but even if those issues were solved, their cumulative effects to date would delay production of any replacement or novel planes for at least a couple years. It's great to destroy bombers and such where you can, but logistic capacity is at least equal in importance to warframe presence and position: this specific loss of air transport options is quite dear. :)

Seen a closer up video, the one or 2 of the occupants jumped out, but they were to low down for they parachute to open correctly
