The trim tab wouldnt make him lose control like he did unless the elevator fully separated from the control lines...and in order to do that, the control cables would have had to have been severed by something. The trim tab is the ONLY thing that is damaged visibly. You know what? I bet he stalled. A high wing load stall at high speed. |

Re: Airplane Crash at Reno Air Races Friday Sept 16 2011
High speed stall is my final verdict. That plane was flying extremely fast. A high speed stall is caused by a high angle of attack vs wing loading. The air flowing over one wing was probably going faster than the speed of sound..that mustang could probably do 550kts, and thats damn near the speed of sound. Not many prop planes can fly that fast. Not many civilian JETS fly that fast. Very few military jets fly that fast except in dire emergencies. These guys do it on purpose. |

Re: Airplane Crash at Reno Air Races Friday Sept 16 2011
Who knows. I learned enough about control surfaces in school to know they're pretty important. I thought I had heard that eye witnesses had said they saw the pilot struggling to control the aircraft, and they were lauding him as a hero for possibly crashing in a less populated area than he could have. Possibly this aircraft's remains will yield the black box with the data of hyd. pressures, position of air controls, and the like. I'm not even sure if this aircraft had that capability, but it was highly modified, so it's possible i suppose. That could provide more answers, like if there had been a hydraulic system failure of some sort. |

We'll find out soon. He had enough altitude and speed to recover his aircraft, the pilot seemed like he was conscious, and something like a trim tab wouldnt cause a catastrophic loss of control over the aircraft if you ask me. I think he was just going TOO fast.
