only reason im bringing this up is that a family friend was sitting about 5 feet from the guy in the power wheelchair,he wasnt at his seat due to a breathing problem,he was in a nearby ambulance,when the crash happened,hey fired up the wagon and went to the crash site and bob was still on a gurney in the back....he said it was surreal.

The NTSB thoroughly investigated the extensive modifications made to the airplane. The modifications had made the aircraft lighter and reduced drag, but decreased stability. Leeward took the plane to 530 mph during the race, about 40 mph faster than he had ever gone before.

There was evidence of extreme stress on the airframe demonstrated by buckling of the fuselage aft of the wing and gaps appearing between the fuselage and the canopy during flight (clearly visible in high resolution photographs taken by spectators).

However, the investigation (released in August 2012) found that the probable cause of the crash were reused single-use locknuts in the left elevator trim tab system that loosened. This led to a fatigue crack in an attachment screw and allowed the trim tab to flutter. This flutter caused the trim tab link assembly to fail which led to loss of control of the aircraft. Untested and undocumented modifications to the airplane contributed to the accident.

Particularly, the right trim tab had been fixed in place. Had both trim tabs been operational, the loss of the left trim tab alone may not have caused loss of control. When the trim tab failed, Leeward was exposed to 17Gs which quickly incapacitated him and likely rendered him unconscious.

High speed stall is my final verdict. That plane was flying extremely fast. A high speed stall is caused by a high angle of attack vs wing loading. The air flowing over one wing was probably going faster than the speed of sound..that mustang could probably do 550kts, and thats damn near the speed of sound.

Not many prop planes can fly that fast. Not many civilian JETS fly that fast. Very few military jets fly that fast except in dire emergencies. These guys do it on purpose.
Wrong. Trim tab was the cause

My father took me to see the Reno Airshow every year from the time I was 2 to 12. 35 years later, I can still remember seeing my first fiery crash and the smell. Don't take your kids to Air races!
