Air Niugini 737 Landed Short Into Chuuk Lagoon
An Air Niugini Boeing 737 landed short of the runway at Chuuk International Airport on Weno, in the Federated States of Micronesia, on September 28, 2018, and came to rest in Chuuk Lagoon. There were 47 people aboard, 35 passengers and 12 crew. Local people in small boats reached the aircraft and took off most of the passengers and all of the crew. US Navy sailors working nearby on a wharf project helped, shuttling people ashore in an inflatable boat before the aircraft sank in about 30 metres of water. Forty-six people survived and six were injured. One passenger did not get out and was found later by rescue divers. Investigators attributed the accident to the crew ditching short of the runway after losing situational awareness.
