Aeroperu Flight 603 Crash
A tragic aviation accident occurred involving Flight 603, a Boeing 757 registered as N52AW. The flight departed from Lima on runway 15 at 12:42 a.m., bound for Santiago. Shortly after takeoff, the crew encountered severe instrument malfunctions and made a decision to return to the airport. Initial climb data indicated discrepancies in the aircraft's airspeed and altitude readings, which were registering abnormally low. Despite calm weather conditions, the aircraft unexpectedly received a windshear warning. The Boeing 757 ascended to Flight Level 130 before the crew commenced a return maneuver to Lima. During this phase, the captain faced a critical issue: the airspeed and altitude readings on his instruments were excessively high, leading to an overspeed warning. Conversely, the co-pilot's instruments displayed worryingly low airspeed, activating the stick shaker, a device that warns of an impending stall. As the aircraft attempted to return to Lima, it continued to lose altitude and eventually made contact with the ocean. The impact occurred at a 10-degree angle with the left wing and the number 1 engine hitting the water first, at a speed of 260 knots. Following the initial impact, the aircraft ascended briefly to approximately 200 feet before crashing in an inverted position. At the time of the crash, the captain's instruments were showing an airspeed of 450 knots and an altitude of 9,500 feet, readings that were grossly incorrect. Early findings from the investigation revealed a startling oversight: the aircraft's three static ports on the left side were found to be obstructed by masking tape. This tape, applied prior to the flight for cleaning and polishing purposes, was not removed, leading to the fatal instrument errors that contributed to the crash. |

Re: Aeroperu Flight 603 Crash
power was at idle and maintaing flight, that morons means your aircraft was on a descent and gliding. That's why I always have my gps, it gives me a six pack independent from the airplane systems. |

Re: Aeroperu Flight 603 Crash
Later investigation into the accident revealed that duct tape was accidentally left over some or all of the static ports (on the underside of the fuselage) after the aircraft was cleaned, eventually leading to the crash. Employee Eleuterio Chacaliaza left the tape on by mistake. NOW THE TAPE IS PRINTED TO SAY PLEASE REMOVE WHEN DONE! · · · · |
