The Yosemite Firefall

The Yosemite Firefall is a famous natural phenomenon occurring for about 10 minutes each February when the setting sun illuminates Yosemite National Park's Horsetail Fall on El Capitan, making the water glow brilliant orange and red like molten lava. Historically, it was a man-made event where burning embers were pushed off Glacier Point.

Adequate snowpack and daytime warmth to melt snow for water flow, plus a completely clear western sky so sunlight hits the narrow crevice at the precise angle. Best viewed from the El Capitan Picnic Area and designated turnouts along Northside Drive in Yosemite Valley.

From 1872 until January 1968, hotel operators at Glacier Point intentionally built massive wood fires and pushed glowing red-hot embers 3,000 feet down the cliff into Yosemite Valley.

The National Park Service halted the practice in 1968 because it caused excessive crowd congestion and was not aligned with preserving the park's natural environment.
