In wiki you can read " between 1825 - 1880 some breeders of Gent in Belgium developed a very big rabbit breed... From these the German Riese .... " In fact I was once told by a Gentian citizen that it goes back centuries. Due to the region having a history of occupations by foreigners, they avoided confiscation of their animals which they raised for their meat by using an animal that was not looked after as it wasn't regarded as a meat provider. Also: very docile, not noisy so avoiding a soon death, and it can survive on grass and hay which is good in war time. |
