Re: USS FORRESTAL (CV-59) U.S. NAVY Aircraft Carrier Ordinance Fire (Vietnam Era)

I saw it in basic at Great Lakes back in 1996 when I joined the Navy

It used to play on the mounted TVs in the huge mess halls there and they would loop it all day long

When the footage of the USS Forrestal Fire would play I (and half the mess hall) would watch it and then eat during the training type parts. I would watch it every single time breakfast lunch and dinner everyday

Never got tired of it

Watching it now (of course I missed this thread because it kept getting bumped off page one!) brings back all the smells and sounds of Great Lakes

I was there in the winter, and let me tell you how winter on Lake Michigan felt to a punk ass kid from California

It put me in check real quick, long before any DI could smell that I was a smart ass and put me in check

Amazing thread Docfr8

Re: USS FORRESTAL (CV-59) U.S. NAVY Aircraft Carrier Ordinance Fire (Vietnam Era)

Seen that many times in 22 years in the Navy..a comedy of tragic errors...we've learned alot from that accident. I was on board the USS Nimitz when we had a flightdeck fire in 1982 and the fire was out in 10 minutes...we did lose 14 crew...
Totally understood.. After WWII.. The there really wasnt a big threat as far as a formidable naval force. Not till after this incident, the Navy didnt have a standardized training regimen, or qualifaction schools to give the crewmembers "basic" shipboard firefighting.

It is absolutely mandatory today and all ship have a Damage Control Training Team (DCTT) to do inhouse training in conjunction with "basic and advanced" shipboard and aviation firefighting.

Back to the original point.. The FORRESTAL was the pivot point for the Navy to make standardized damage control training for all crew members..

Fair winds and following seas Shipmate. Sorry about the loss of the 14 on the NIMITZ.. Those individuals gave up thier lives so many can live on.

I joined the Navy at age 19 , one month out of high school . Boot camp at RTC/NTC San Diego. IC electric school. Like a dumbass , I was home sick for Miami , and chose the USS SARATOGA out of Mayport , Jax. Florida . But , The Saratoga just came in from a med - cruise . So , all we did is get drunk every night . Anyway , one night me and a colored fella from New York went to the movies . We drank a big bottle of E+J Brandy . We got back on board , and on the way back to the engineering berthing , ( aft end of ship ) we started horsing around the colored guy jammed me up against the bulk head . Something sharp stabbed me bad in my back . So I said thats enough . We split up , he went to his locker , my bunk / locker was on the opposite side . Then something came over me , fucking weird . Like I got possessed or something . So I started to walk over to his area , I pulled a dogging wrench from its mounting tongs next to a hatch on the deck , held it in my right hand , just behind my right leg , I said hey RODNEY ... I swung it up in a curving arc motion . but , at the last second I pulled back ,, realizing I was going to kill him at that measure of force . So I clocked him good right on the left / top side of his forehead . Next thing I know , I'[m running from this guy , who is chasing me with a 4 foot fog applicator ( for keeping the heat back , while fighting a fire ) .. We ended up in the master at arms office . They locked me up , then turned me loose . I remember knowing full well , not to go back to my berthing . I went to the forward part of the ship . There were 2000 to 3000 empty bunks , you couldn't find me if you had to. The next day , a guy I knew said RODNEY waited for me all night . wow ... Thing is , I swear ,, I think some fucking ghost or something took over me that night . That'[s how fucking weird it was . - Do you think there are ghosts or spirits on these ships ? I got court martialed , and took an OTH discharge . And you know what ? I am glad !! Fuck the U.S. NAVY . -- We fucking poisoned the indians and stole North America , what the fuck are we supposed to be proud of ?? Everything is one big fucking lie !!!!!!
