Two Brown Bears Fight Over Salmon in Katmai National Park, Alaska, 2012
Japanese photographer Shogo Asao photographed two male brown bears fighting in Katmai National Park in Alaska after one tried to take a salmon the other had caught. The sequence was distributed in November 2012. Asao, then 60, was hiking toward a nearby waterfall when he encountered the bears on a gravel road through spruce forest. The animals roared, rose onto their hind legs and grappled, swatting and biting at each other's faces for several minutes. At one point, one bear broke away and ran to within about 10 feet of Asao as the other pursued it.
