We have a variety of them here in the Southwestern U.S., we call them Sun Spiders. They're usually no bigger than about 1.5" long from toe to toe but they are highly aggressive and won't hesitate to bite.

These things are very ill tempered and will hate on anything near them including others of their kind. G.I.'s in the Middle East make them fight eachother or other bugs for fun and betting... well, the dudes I know did.

they aren't poisonous, but I suppose a bite could end up causing a serious infection.

and, they do look more like the scorpion family to me, than spiders.
