Red Shirt Protest Crackdown in Bangkok, Thailand, May 19, 2010
Thai troops moved against the Red Shirt protest camp in central Bangkok on May 19, 2010, ending demonstrations that had occupied the area since April. Soldiers cleared bamboo and burning tire barricades as smoke and fires rose across the city. Troops and medics carried casualties from the streets, while other soldiers guarded detainees whose hands had been bound. The Truth for Reconciliation Commission of Thailand later put the overall toll from the unrest at about 92 dead and roughly 2,000 injured. It blamed armed "men in black" as well as the army's use of live ammunition. Canadian freelance journalist Chandler Vandergrift was struck in the head by grenade shrapnel at Sarasin junction on May 19. A soldier was wounded in the same explosion. Vandergrift was seriously injured and underwent brain surgery, but he was not killed.
