Re: Red Haired | Human Race Education
I was at school in Enhlsnd from 1990 to 2001 with red hair. It made things horrendous for me (despite being okay looks wise), especially aged 12-14. People would spit in my direction, and if someone brushed against me everyone would laugh at me. I was a true victim; my hair idolised by my family and constantly pointed out as "different" and "special". People came up with the word Ginga to call me which do this day I cannot actually say myself. I was made to feel like less of a person than everyone else and it was a contributing factor in my suicide attempt at 15. My family dismissed the bullying and did nothing to support me. In their eyes the bullies were "not to be paid any attention to". I hope I'm not so fucking stupid if time comes for me to help my children overcome such things. Making jokes about people would rather be dead than ginger, or their wife had a stillbirth than a ginger baby still really affects me. The shame of it is people don't see it as an issue if a red headed person feels so victimised and hurt. It's not like being fat, you can lose weight. Having red hair is part of who you are, and when people tell you to your face you're fucking and a freak because of it, it touches a nerve. |

Re: Red Haired | Human Race Education
Dodecahedron, I'm so sorry you experienced that mistreatment. I'm a natural redhead myself, and it's so strange to me how in some places it's adored and in others it's a target for bullying. I grew up in Maine and never even knew that redheads being bullied for their hair color was a thing until talking with people in other countries online. Especially hearing about how ginger kids are viewed/treated in England... =/
