It is an inherited recessive genetic trait caused by a mutation of the MC1R gene on chromosome 16, that determines pigmentation. Therefore there are several bloodlines in which it appears. Western Europeans with red hair may well have inherited the trait from their Scandinavian forefathers. Because the gene is recessive, the first red haired person to be born must have had parents that both carried the gene.
