The guides are totally at fault. They didn't read the aggressive body language of the elephant - head up and ears out. Then when they saw it begin to charge, they should have had a mental "line in the sand" past which they should have fired their guns past its head to scare it.

These local natives were either poorly trained, or they were so overconfident, like "it wouldn't DARE attack me! Doesn't it know who I am?!"
