Northern Lights In Northern Ireland (Valentines Day 2011)

Just in from observing and shooting a beautiful aurora display!. Just as it was getting dark I noticed a significant southern tilt of the IMF with increased geomagnetic activity. This single dip is almost a guarantee of getting a mid latitude aurora display. The 'traffic lights' changed from amber to red alert so I left the house immediately and drove to the top of the Glenshane Pass on high ground where there was still snow on the ground. I took an exposure of the N sky and saw nothing, I repeated the process over and over again then suddenly an aurora appeared on the image and as the min's ticked by it brightened. I sent out text alerts to as many people as I could before my credit died and soon I was joined by Conor McDonald and Declan O'Doherty. Then the aurora intensified until we could see it easily with the naked eye in the N to NW sky reaching over 30 degrees in height (60 full Moons) with obvious green colours, at times the camera picked up subtle reds and purples with faint vertical rays. Visually the display lasted a long time, at least an hour and a half and peaked after 22.00 when we could see it flickering in brightness and changing shape and structure literally every second!. The aurora was a real treat above the moonlit snow-covered mountains. Here's several images taken at ISO800, 18mm, F/3.5 and F/4.5 for 35-30 sec's.

Guess I won't have to travel that far to see the Northern Lights.

Re: Northern Lights In Northern Ireland (Valentines Day 2011)

That is SO not fair! I've lived in Alaska since 1978. I *think* I saw the Northern Lights. Very faint. Could have been clouds. Coulda been the LSD I'd taken. Pretty sure it was just clouds though. However I have seen some amazing star showers. Not to mention the fricken National Emblem that has been sitting on the hood of my truck stalking my dog. (the one in my avatar) Illegal to kill a bald eagle, so I've been throwing snowballs at it and shooting it my repeating rubberband gun.
My ex still has my camera, but I'll try and get a pic of it. That fucker is HUGE. I hate eagles. Everyone down in the lower 48 think they're this wonderful majestic bird. Damn things are worse than seagulls.
