Re: Mother Kills Toddler by Keeping Him at the Park for Two Days
So true. The stigma and overall societal ignorance perpetrated at those with mental health diseases astounds me. Sadly, I see this within the clinical setting on a daily basis, even with medical peers who are well-educated and *should* know better. This is a tragedy on many levels.

Dunno but jumping from a moving cab and getting injured and simply telling the court she was in a much better productive space now and the courts ruled in her favour is more of a fuck up of justice imo. The mother child bond in most cases is more important when cases go to court than the father child bond. |

That statement, while it may be true, doesn't apply to this case at all. "Depression" and "bipolar disorder" are not excuses for murdering anyone, especially your own child. Patients damn well know the difference between right and wrong. If you're a doctor, or mental health professional in a clinical setting, you already know this.

Because she was "better". Mental illness doesn't usually disappear. It ebbs and flows. |

She's free, no prison time, but has a list of requirements she has to follow. Hopefully the people monitoring her will do so regularly so she can get the help she needs, although I think a stay in a psychiatric facility would be in her best interest just to make sure she's stable. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local...7df_story.html |

Re: Mother Kills Toddler by Keeping Him at the Park for Two Days
The system completely failed in this situation. After her erratic behavior, she should *not* have had unsupervised visits (let alone custody) of her child. The father knew she was unstable, and pled to the court for sole custody, and was denied. Some states are worse than others when it comes to fathers' rights. If she had a psychotic break, she was unaware of what she did to her child. After the break, when some stability returned, she understood her actions. She should *never* have any more children, though. It reminds me of Andrea Yates. I feel so sorry for Yates: her husband was in a right wing religion that preached total female submission, a woman's sole purpose is breeding, etc. Yates had a long history of schizophrenia, multiple hospitalizations, therapy, medications. She had been released from hospital only days before she killed her kids. Her husband forbid her from taking meds, having therapy, or even seeking child care help from her family. Yates should be in a hospital for the criminally insane; her husband should be serving life in a federal pen, but he was never charged. |
