im more interested in how and why clams hide deep under sand.. i thought you fish for clams under water.. also.. whats with the tiny holes? do they show up when he stomps the ground?
When the tide is going out the sand is still waterlogged because of the sea level. When a clam or pippi dig, the displaced sand is softer so by stomping around the place you change the water pressure in the surrounding sand. An air bubble is then formed and comes to the surface which causes the small holes.

When the tide is going out the sand is still waterlogged because of the sea level. when we were short on cash, we bought some PVC and made the clamming guns.... then sold them for $30 a pop.

Thank you. BTW I lived in Canungra when I was little and that's where I learned about pippi's for the first time.
Spent a few days in Canungra about 18 years ago being shown around the training base. Big tourist spot now i hear.

that was pretty interesting. I thought that was great for the old guy. He obviously enjoyed it, got food for himself and got some exercise doing it.
