Fragments damaged several German houses. One of the fragments pierced the roof of a residential building in the Güls district of the city of Koblenz, and no one was injured.

According to the police, fragments also fell on buildings in the Hunsrück and Eifel regions.

Residents of several areas had previously reported a bright flash and a fireball in the sky.

Scientists recovered several meteor fragments from the house.

Early analysis suggests they are chondrites, the most common type of stony meteorite.

The European Space Agency (ESA) confirmed the asteroid was not detected beforehand because it approached from the direction of the Sun.

This blind spot makes it difficult for ground-based telescopes to spot small objects until they hit the atmosphere.

This time it traveled from the southwest to the northeast. It was visible for about six seconds across Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. It travelled roughly 38,000 miles per hour. As it hit the Earth atmosphere, it slowed down significantly due to friction.

Experts note that while the initial entry is incredibly fast, any surviving fragments decelerate to terminal velocity which is about 450 miles per hour (725 km/h) by the time they reach the ground.

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and ESA are utilizing data from the AllSky7 camera network and seismometers to pinpoint the exact flight path and mass of the object.

Most asteroid surveys scan the dark night sky for moving objects. Small bodies approaching from the Sun’s direction or from bright twilight often escape detection. So far, astronomers have detected only 11 natural objects before they entered Earth’s atmosphere.

ESA is working to improve early detection. Projects such as the Flyeye asteroid survey telescope will scan large areas of the sky to find dangerous objects earlier.

They should just wait until it goes dark and look then.
